Year 12 students playing cards when they should be studying?

No!  They were using cards to simulate the spread of a disease during a video conference for students beginning A-level Maths.

Jenny Gage from Cambridge University hosted the conference between St Joseph’s College, John of Gaunt School and Exmouth Community College.   The students learnt how  to use mathematics to  model a flock of birds, how a sound behaves and how to predict the collision of galaxies.

The new learning resource zone was used for the conference. The students had the opportunity to present their ideas to the other two colleges and to receive feedback.

Further video conferences are planned for this year. Year 8 students will be working on codes. One group of  Year 10 students will be looking at the spread of diseases while another group learns how to weigh a planet.
